Checklist

With so many matters to deal with, having a checklist can help you stay organized. There are few things you might want to keep track of...

  • Determine whether the deceased individual was an organ or tissue donor.
  • Obtain Medical Certificate of Death and Statement of Death.
  • Contact a funeral home or crematorium or other individual who will take charge of the body.
  • Notify relatives and friends.
  • Make arrangements for dependants and pets.
  • Secure any physical property.
  • Locate the Will, if any.
  • Determine whether the individual has pre-planned or pre-paid for funeral services or interment.
  • Decide whether to place an obituary in the local paper or online service.
  • Determine whether there is a life insurance policy in place and next steps.
  • Order a Death Certificate.
  • Contact the federal government about cancelling CPP and OAS benefits, and documents like a passport.
  • Look into survivor and death benefits.
  • Contact financial institutions and cancel credit cards.
  • Cancel subscription services.
